The Most Beautiful Avenue in the World

Champs Alyses is perhaps the most well known street in the world; the street which officially referred to as "Avenue des Champs-Alysess" represent what in the eyes of many tourists exemplifies France. With its cinemas, cafes, and luxury specialty shops it is also one of the worlds most expensive pieces of real estate with rents as high as $1.25 million a year for 1,000 square feet of space.

The French are fiercely proud of this national treasure which they regard as the most beautiful avenue in the world. However its historic nature and romantic allure has been lost, albeit only slightly with the advent of globalization, in recent years Champs Alyses has seen a remarkable change in character following the invasion of global chain stores. However it still holds a special place in the hearts of all Frenchmen.

Every year on Bastille Day, the largest military parade in Europe passes down the Champs- Alyses, reviewed by the President of the French Republic. Annually the Champs Alyses Committee contributes to the holiday seasons lighting of the Champs Alyses from the beginning of November to end of the December. The Champs Alyses is also the traditional end of the last stage of the Tour de France. Huge and spontaneous gatherings occasionally take place on the Champs Alyses in celebration of popular events, such as New Years Eve, or when France won the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

This impressive promenade stretches from the Place de la Concorde to the Place Charles de Gaulle, the site of the Arc de Triomphe. At its western end the Champs Alyses is bordered by cinemas, theaters, cafes and luxury shops. Near the Place de la Concorde, the street is bordered by the Jardins des Champs Alysess beautifully arranged gardens with fountains and some grand buildings including the Grand and Petit Palais at the southern side and the Alyses at its northern side.

The name given to the avenue refers to the Greek Myth of Elysian fields which is the place of the blessed. Today the splendid architecture of the grandiose "Champs Alyses " is admired by many people. It is located right next to the Palais de Alyses, the presidential palace and the Grand Palais that was erected in the late 19th century. While walking through the gardens and tree-lined promenades one could even encounter an open-air marionette theatre for children which is a French tradition popular through the ages.

A number of luxury hotels in Paris are located in close proximity to the Champs Alyses allowing tourists to immerse themselves fully in this Parisian landmark.
