Your Home Cinema; Don’t Forget The Popcorn

There used to be a time when you sat down in front of the television and watched television in mono sound on a screen smaller than the one you are viewing this article on. Today televisions have grown in size and capability and the home cinema and home entertainment system has come of age. Televisions come in all sizes from ones on your mobile phone to 150-inches large.

But what is the best way to set up a home cinema system in your living room and what do you need to make it work? Here is a simple check sheet to make sure you don’t miss anything out.

Television or projector?

The first decision you are going to have to make is whether or not you want to have a projector or a standard LCD or Plasma television. The advantage of a projector is that you’ll get a larger picture, however you’ll need to factor in changing the bulbs every couple of thousand hours (not that long considering you probably watch around 20 hours of television a week) and while projector technology has improved drastically over the last couple of years, they still need a fairly dark room and a white wall to be viewed.

LCD or Plasma?

So you’ve decided to go for a television over a projector, now you need to decide whether or not to go for plasma or LCD technology. The main criteria will be size. Under 46-inches you can’t really tell the difference. However your choice will be restricted if you opt for plasma with Pioneer’s Kuro range the one to go for if your plans are to go big. If you are going LCD then there are a number of manufacturers that offer solutions from Samsung, LG, Philips, Sony, Sharp and Toshiba. Philips has Ambilight for those looking for something a bit different. Ambilight fires light out of the back, and with its Aurea model out the front, that matches the colours on the screen. The idea is that it reduces strain on your eyes.

Amp.

Once you’ve got the visuals out of the way you need to look at the sound and you start with an amp. Amps again come in all shapes and sizes with complete kits offered by companies like Samsung and LG, while companies like Denon and Arcam specialise in a system that you add components like a DVD player or games console to. An amp is also good for controlling all your different devices within your home entertainment system.

Speakers.

You’ve got an amp, but now you need to hear the music. Yamaha and a couple of other manufacturers make a single speaker that sits under your television called a Soundbar. This saves on cluttering up your lounge with speakers, however for audiophiles it won’t beat a 7.1 surround system where there are speakers everywhere you look.

DVD/Blu-ray/Content.

Once you’ve got a compete system set up you need something to play on its. If you are into movies you’ll need to get a good up-scalling DVD or if you’re an early adopter a Blu-ray player. Of course you can also get HD movies and TV shows via Sky’s HD service.

Remote controls.

Having all this kit will mean a remote control for virtually every device. Rather than clutter up your armchair’s sofa, make sure you look at getting an all in one offering from either Philips or Logitech.

Hopefully this information will help you to create a home cinema that provides you with an unrivalled viewing experience.

Myths Related To Blu-Rays Busted

Blu-ray disc, which is also known as BD or blu-ray, is a format for storing optical disc media. It is generally used for high-definition video storage and data storage. This disc looks like any ordinary disc and has the same dimensions.

The name of blu-ray Disc comes from the blue laser that is used for reading and writing this type of disc. It is a combination of the word “blue” that stands for blue-violet laser and `ray` standing for optical ray.

Since it has shorter wavelength of around 405 nm, so it can store substantially more data than a DVD that uses a red or 650 nm laser. To give you more details, a dual layer blu-ray disc has the capacity to store 50 GB, which is almost six times of the capacity of similar dual layer DVD.

The blu-ray Disc was invented by the Blu-ray Disc Association. It is a group of companies that represent computer hardware, consumer electronics, and are also involved in motion picture production. There are more than 180 member companies in this association, from all over the world. The current board of directors consists of companies like Apple Computer, Inc., Warner Bros. Entertainment, Dell Inc., Thomson Multimedia, Hewlett Packard Company, Sharp Corporation, Hitachi, Ltd., Twentieth Century Fox, LG Electronics Inc, Sony Corporation, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Sun Microsystems, Inc Ltd, TDK Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Pioneer Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Walt Disney Pictures.

There was a time when blu-ray disc was competing with the HD DVD format, but soon most of the leading companies announced that they could no longer find buyers for their HD DVD players and recorders. Hence blu-ray emerged as the clear winner of the format war.

There are many myths regarding this technology since it is comparatively new. In this article we will try to clear some of those. The first myth is that internet connection is necessary for supporting this format. It is absolutely untrue. Internet connection is not needed for basic playback of blu-ray supported movies. It will only be needed for extra features like downloading value-added services, web browsing, watching latest movie trailers etc. You will also need internet if you want to authorize the managed copies of those blu-ray movies that are transferred over your home network.

The second myth is regarding down-converting analog outputs. Blu-ray players will not down-convert the signals of analog output unless your video contains ICT or Image Constraint Token. Since most of the movie studios like Sony, Fox, Disney, MGM, Paramount, and Universal do not use this feature so you will not be having much trouble with this.

Another question is regarding supporting mandatory managed copies. Well, the blu-ray format will have mandatory managed copy (MMC) in order to enable customers to make legal and authentic copies of blu-ray movies, which can be easily transferred over the home network.

Since it is a new technology so it is obvious that the first generation products will be somewhat expensive as there will be low production volumes. But manufacturers are planning a wide range of blu-ray products like players, drives, recorders, media, writers, etc and hence product volumes are soon expected to rise giving way to lower prices.

It is a general expectation that blu-ray will soon replace DVDs and most of the big movie studios have hugely supported this format compared to DVDs monopoly. They have already released movies in this format and plan to continue the same. But it is a high probability that DVDs will also not become completely extinct. Chances are that these two formats will co-exist for some time. That is the reason why most top consumer electronics brands like Panasonic, Philips, Sony, Samsung, Sharp, Pioneer and LG have introduced products that can read and write CDs, DVDs as well as blu-ray discs.

Could Blu-Ray Be The Next Big Wave In Home Entertainment?

Many people are curious as to whether this new technology is worth their hard-earned money. They are looking to see what the true differences are between Blu-ray and standard DVD’s. People want to know what else Blu-Ray offers than just higher definition and clarity.

So what is this whole Blu-ray about, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world’s leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson).

The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc.

Blu-ray technology is here to stay. People have been very impressed with this new product and what it offers. They are in love with the high quality and will tell you they wouldn’t choose a regular DVD over it.

This technology with the enhance HD features developing everyday will bring the ultimate home theater experience. This type of technology is no doubt the wave of the future and many accepting this technology into their homes.

There is one complaint about this new Blu-ray technology though. There is not a large enough movie collection out in Blu-ray yet. New releases come out in this way but the older movies that are already out aren’t available. What do you do when you want to see an older movie but it’s not in Blu-ray?

Go out and see what this Blu-ray technology is all about if this interests you. There is a likely chance you will find it amazing. There are so many options like even writing your own materials onto blank Blu-ray discs. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.

In fact, seven of the eight major movie studios (Disney, Fox, Warner, Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM) have released movies in the Blu-ray format and six of them (Disney, Fox, Sony, Warner, Lionsgate and MGM) are releasing their movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format.

As you can see a lot of big players in the industry are making the transition. This is becoming a fast transition so this type of technology is never to early to start in one’s life.

Next Gen Consoles; Who Wins?

Gaming is more mainstream than ever, but what console should you go for? Are you a casual or hardcore gamer, do you like playing online, what about getting interactive? Well the good news is that there is a console for you out there that will offer exactly what you need, you’ve just got to work out what that actually is.

Xbox 360 Elite.

Microsoft’s flagship gaming console offers a large hard drive to store games and movies on and a HDMI connection so you can connect it to a HDTV and watch high-definition movies or play games with crystal clear graphics. The Xbox 360 has been around for almost 3 years now so the games library that is on offer is pretty deep and this means there is bound to be something for everyone be it racing games, platformers or good old shoot-em ups. Where the Xbox 360 edges out over the competition is the focus on online gaming. While it doesn’t strangely have wireless connectivity built in as standard you can connect online and play against other gamers from around the world. In fact you can play millions of gamers everyday as most people do. Additionally you can also download movies and TV shows via Microsoft’s Video Marketplace. Until recently you could also get a HD DVD drive for the console however following Toshiba’s shutting down of the format this is no longer available. Rumours circle the web that Microsoft will be announcing a Blu-ray player for the console in the near future.

PlayStation 3.

Sony’s next generation console and follow up to the PlayStation 2, it’s a supercomputer in the making coming with a Blu-ray drive built-in and the option of a 40GB or 60GB hard drive. Considerably more expensive than the Xbox 360 even after a price cut at the end of 2007, the PlayStation also has a limited offering of games being only still under a year old on the market. However with a plethora of good games either just landing or schedule to land in 2008 all that is about to change. Metal Gear Solid, GT5, Drake, Killzone 2 and a couple more should ignite some much needed interest and what with Sony winning the next generation DVD battle with its Blu-ray format against Toshiba’s HD DVD, the PS3 is positioned to eventually come out on top.

Nintendo Wii.

While the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 pride themselves on being at the cutting edge of the gaming sphere with the latest graphics, demanding gaming and offering games gamers would want to play, Nintendo has chosen a different tactic for it gaming offering. Instead the Wii focuses on interactive game play, ditching the multimedia aspects, the video downloads or online communities instead for fun short games that involve the whole family. Most of the best games on the Wii are short lived affairs and anyone looking to buy the console should invest in Wii Play, its fitness focused game Wii Fit (complete with balance board) and Mario Kart with the Wii Wheel, a wheel that you can clip the motion sensor controller into so you can pretend to drive while sitting on the sofa. The Nintendo Wii also has the benefit of being super cheap, at just 180 pounds it’s fast becoming the new board game for the connected dinner party generation.

These next generation consoles while expensive are ultimately worthwhile. the gaming experiences they provide are constantly shifting the boundaries of what we consider gaming.

Video games expert Thomas Pretty looks into pros and cons of the three major consoles and why gaming news is vitally important for the game playing fraternity.
