The Enchantment Of Purchasing Books Second Hand

There are many individuals that purchase items that are second handed, such as furniture and clothing, so, why not books? A visit to any secondhand bookstore is like browsing through decades of forgotten treasures or adventures waiting to be chartered.

The greatest thing about purchasing books from any second hand store is that it is a great way to find many books that are no long in print. During one period of time, these books may have been a classic, but due to change and demands of the public they are no longer popular and publisher have stopped printing them. The quality of these books have not changed at all. The only thing that has changed is the environment in which we live and the traditions and values of people in society today.

Many individuals have found several treasures in second hand bookstores throughout the years that they have been proud to add to their personal libraries as well. It seems that with the passing of years books have lost a certain enchantment about them. Older books contain paper that is of a much higher quality and seems to stiffer than books that are published in the market today. Older books also have the titles engraved neatly one the front and the side of the books for a more lasting purpose, because they did not use jacket covers for protection.

With the growing popularity of second hand bookstores constantly increasing, it helps to ensure that readers will be able to purchase second handed books cheaper with the passing of each day. Some of the larger second hand bookstores provide their shoppers with a place where they look at the books they have chosen prior to purchasing while enjoying a nice cup of coffee or cappuccino. While the smaller second hand bookstores that are a type of mom and pop operation offer a much more quiet atmosphere where individuals are able to browse through thousands of second hand books without being troubled with salespeople. What ever the individual prefers there is a wide range of second hand bookstores to choose from within your local phone directory.

Many retail bookstores have added sections within their own stores that consecrates on second hand books simply because of the rising popularity of these books and their willingness of attempting to compete with second hand bookstores. There is a lost ambiance that the larger retail bookstores will never be able to obtain no matter how hard they try, especially with the smaller mom and pop second hand bookstores.

When you walk into one of these mom and pop bookstores you are immediately greeted with a very cheerful and heartfelt welcoming. Directly following your greeting, you are politely asked if there is any thing that they can help find. If you do not have the time to browse and know exactly what it is you are searching for, then you will be taken directly to the book you have requested. On the other hand if you are just wishing to spend the time and browse for a while, they will more than likely tell you to feel free to browse through their available sections and let them know if you need any assistance. This personal touch can not be obtained from the larger retail bookstores.

Locating The Book You Desire At A Used Bookstore

Many used bookstores today will keep their inventory of used books on a variety of computer databases, which is helpful for those individuals who do not have the time to spend browsing through the thousands of titles within the bookstore. This will enable the reader to access the books in which they desire much faster and easier, which allows the bookstore to provide a better quality of customer service for the customer.

Employees are able to use different types of search filters, which have been built into the database to search for books in a variety of ways. This also helps customers who may not know the entire name of the author or they may only remember the first couple words of the title. A used bookstore that has their inventory available on a database can assist call-in customers much more quickly as well. Technology is an advancement that all businesses no matter what type need to take advantage of to better serve their customers.

The pricing at used bookstores is usually determined by the condition of the books and the demand of a particular book. For instance, if a book has been considerably defaced then the price will be much lower than a book that still has its original jacket cover with it that has no rips or tears on it. If a book has pages that are yellowed and curved, then the same book will pages in better condition will be priced a bit higher. For the most part, bookstores will price their used books for what they feel they will be able to get out of them theoretically. However, some smaller used bookstores do still haggle with their customers from time to time about the selling prices of some of their used books, so do not be afraid to attempt this method either.

It is an asset to keep as many books as we can in circulation, so if you do not have anyone to give your books to, there are some ways to get rid yourself of them such as have a yard sale, donate them to charity, sell them to booksellers that will purchase used books, or simply donate them to your local used bookstore. You could also do what I do when I get a handful that I am unsure of what to do with and that is go by my local library and drop them down their return chute, because they give these types of books to an organization that is in need of reading material.

The majority of used books purchased actually have a new copy still available on the shelves at other retail stores, of course, for a much higher prices, but it seems as if individuals are becoming tired of paying these costly prices. With the growing demand for used bookstores in your community and via the Internet, consumers have found that paying top dollar for a book that you are going to read once and then give it away is nonsense.

Gifts Hidden Within The Pages

Books are the best gift anyone could give a young person, besides reading to that young person. These books may be purchased at a large retail chain, but why spend a large amount of money on one book when you can spend the exact same amount of money and purchase possibly a dozen books that are sure to please this young individual that much more.

I recently learned from a friend of mine that worked at our local library that before the library can receive new books they must get rid of some of their stock of books that have not been checked out in a while. Once this collection of books has been gathered together they are gone through and I was shocked at the wonderful stories she had to tell of the strange findings her and another librarian found.

As enjoyed our dinner, I could tell you if it was her fascinating stories or the wonderful food that I was enjoying more, but I do know that she had me hanging onto her every word. She explained how she found an older blue certificate two dollar bill in a copy of A Journey To The Center Of The Earth by Jules Verne, which she was shocked to have found. While continuing to go through the many books, which would be sold at a public sale, they found an unlimited supply of monopoly money and playing cards, which readers had apparently used as book markers and had forgot to remove.

She then got to the really great stuff! Inside of a hardback novel written by Stephen King, her co-worker found a piece of folded notebook paper with “I will not start fires” written in the handwriting of a young child ten times. She said that through the years she had heard of this occurring at other libraries in the same books, but they had never had it happened at theres until now. I asked her what the book was, but she said she would let me figure that one out since I was such an avid reader. I guess I will be reading Steven King novel for a while thanks to her!

“What else did you find?” I asked. She went on to tell me about the different movie ticket stubs, a unused band-aid, a wrapper from a candy bar, and several baseball cards. Some of the worst things that she mentioned, which I was shocked to find out were a rusty razor blade in between the pages of an old war book and in between the pages of a couple Harlequin Romance novels were some very short curly hairs. Nasty!

They had found a large variety of dried flowers, especially roses, and even some leaves. Their most prized treasures were handwritten recipes that had been written on index cards, which were of some really great recipes that they both now enjoy making. The funniest thing she found was an entire Cadbury creme egg that had apparently been flattened by the weight of the pages. She said it still tasted great, but I knew she had not ate it or had she?

Purchasing More Advanced Reading Material

With the growing interest and the climbing reading levels of your little ones constantly changing, it may seem ridiculous to purchase books at large retail bookstores. More than likely the exact same book can be purchased at used bookstore for at possibly sixty percent of the cost of a new one.

This is the main reason that many parents have begun purchasing their books and the books for their children at used bookstores either locally or on-line. The main thing about books for children is that they are read at special and different times during the life of any child, and once a child has out grown a book, then they will move on to more advanced reading material, which means their books are discarded quickly. This unfortunate for the books, but a great achievement for the child. The more the child reads, then the more the mind of the child is going to develop, as well as their vocabulary so that they can move on to more advanced reading material, which will help them in school.

These books are usually passed down to younger siblings, given to family members, given to neighbors, placed in garage sales, put up as memorabilia for the child, or given to charity or used bookstores. Children hide the cutest things in the craziest places though, so beware of the little tokens that may have been left by the little tykes. Owners of used bookstores and charity organizations have found many leaves and flowers within the pages of their children’s books. Other popular objects that seem to amaze children are postage stamps, paper dolls, and even paper snowflakes.

Throughout the years there have been many notable items, if not humorous items, left in the pages of many books such as four leaf clovers. A much more valuable item included an original 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle Rookie baseball card number 311, which was still in good condition. Other items included several newspaper articles, postcards, love letters, and even obituary clippings.

In most cases, individuals prefer items that are new, but if you are an avid reader like myself it may seem foolish to spend your hard earned money on new books when the same books can be purchased used. There are several sources for the avid reader who wants to purchase used books, which can be from any of their local used bookstores or by doing an on-line search via the Internet.

By doing a search on the Internet, you will be able to bring up a variety of sites that will have the used book you are searching for at a variety of prices that are available for you. The thing that you have to be aware of is the shipping and handling charges, because some of these sites will get you with these charges. Individuals who frequently visit used bookstores enjoy the freedom of being able to browse through the thousands of books that are available to them without being haggled by testy salespeople.

Hidden Treasures Found On The Shelves Of Book Stores

Books are fascinating treasures themselves for individuals and can normally be purchased for less than five dollars, but there are those that sell for a lot more. Many books set on the shelves of book stores for long periods of time without being sold and the owners place them on the bargain shelves of there stores.

Many of these books were purchased from others readers and had already spent their lives on the shelves book shelves with other books. Some of the books that these readers have sold to book stores are valuable, but the majority are not. Some of these books that may be considered valuable are books that are no longer being printed and used book stores have plenty of these rare books that they themselves are unaware of. Of course, the book itself may not be in great condition and the pages may be frayed, but they are still worth the investment.

Many readers unknowingly feel that if a book is marked as a bargain then it must be a horrible book, but this is not necessarily the case. In fact, many books that are placed in bargain bins are your local book stores is due to the book store have too much over stock. If readers would check out these bargain bins carefully, then they may be surprised at the treasures they find.

First edition books are sought after by collectors of books to add to their collections and even some avid readers to add to their personal libraries, if it happens to be one of their all time favorites. Collectors and even readers, who collect first edition books must be aware that these first edition print books are often marked as second edition. The reason is simply due to the fact that publishers felt that it would show that the author was widely read. A huge example of this is books of poems by Edgar Allan Poe and Francis Scott Key that were marked as second edition prints. First edition copies are admired by collectors and many avid readers, who will place them on their own book selves to become part of their private library.

There are not many individuals who do not have a weakness for a bargain, unless it is at a well known book store, but if it is at a used book store, then the entire concept tends to change. It is extremely important for individuals who read books to keep the books they purchase in circulation, if they do not plan to add them to their own personal library.

I have been known to purchase up to thirty or forty used books at one time. In fact, about a year ago I took my oldest son to sell a couple of his unused video games and while looking around the store I found an amazing bargain on used books. The owner was apparently attempting to get rid of his inventory of books and was selling used books at ten books for a dollar. That was one bargain I could not turn down and I purchased fifty used books that afternoon and went back the next day as well. Once I read two or three of these books I will always give them to a friend only if they promise me to give them to some one else who is an avid reader as well. This way I feel that I am keeping the books in circulation myself. The funny thing is that I have had a couple of my own books sent back to me.
